Preventing Functional Decline
A New Music Therapy Engagement Scale for Persons with Dementia
Completed
Objective
There is some promise in non-pharmacological intervention (e.g. music, art therapy, choral singing) of persons with dementia to maintain engagement / 'connectedness', improve well-being, quality of life and reduce psychological/behavioural symptoms. We developed and validated a 5-item Music Therapy Engagement scale for Dementia (MTED) for use in music therapy for persons with dementia. MTED measures the extent to which persons with dementia are engaged (music and non-music related) during music therapy sessions and can be used by trained observers. Given the increasing popularity of music therapy, this T2 work developed a tool that has very practical application to the clinical and community settings.
