Associate Professor Chan graduated with a BA degree in sociology from Reed College in 1989 and obtained her PhD in sociology from the University of California, Los Angeles in 1995. She has a research interest in ageing, demography, healthy life expectancy, long term care utilisation and social support.
Throughout her career, Associate Professor Chan has focused on ageing issues from a sociological perspective. She has made numerous publications in leading international journals such as the Journal of Ageing and Health as well as the International Journal of Geriatric Psychiatry, examining geriatric community health and geriatric-related healthcare issues and perceptions.
Associate Professor Chan is also the co-author of 'Ageing in Singapore: Service needs & the State' (Routledge 2006) and the co-editor of 'Ultra-low Fertility in Pacific Asia: Trends, Causes and Policy Issues' (Routledge 2009). She is the founding Director of the Centre for Ageing Research and Education at Duke-NUS, a Centre focused on the intersection of the social and medical aspects of growing older in Singapore.
